Malawi
Since October 2005 City of Grace has worked in Malawi, a small country in southern Africa. Malawi has a population of about 13 million people. It is one of the poorest countries in the world -- 79% of Malawians live on less than $1 per day, and per capita income is about $180 a year.
So far, over 650,000 Malawians have died of AIDS, and life expectancy has gone down to 37. As is often the case, HIV/AIDS has impacted children the most. 50% of Malawians are under the age of 15, and over 1.8 million orphans and vulnerable children live in this nation.
Since first visiting Malawi in October 2005, City of Grace has joined hands with three organizations engaged in HIV/AIDS and community transformation ministries. Somebody Cares is a Malawian NGO working alongside churches in more than 30 communities devestated by poverty and AIDS. Visionledd brings groups of churches together to help them care for the orphans and widows in their communities. Partners in Hope, operates one of the most effective HIV/AIDS clinics in southern Africa. Currently serving more than 2,000 HIV+ patients a month, this clinic is bringing hope to those who have felt hopeless. Together these ministries are enabling hundreds of local churches to build faith, generate hope, and minister to communities overwhelmed by HIV/AIDS. We believe that through our partnership God can extend His grace and give hope to the hopeless in this beautiful nation
Through the Global Opportunities Fund, City of Grace has invested more than $85,0000 dollars in HIV/AIDS related ministry, and sent 8 Global Adventure teams to provide hope, help and encouragement to the people of Malawi.
Here are some specific things, that together with our partners we have been able to accomplish since the fall of 2005.
- Built 2 feeding centers that feed over 1,000 orphans, 5 days a week.
- Purchased 8 acres for a farm so that villagers can grow food to feed orphans.
- Drilled and refurbished 8 wells that provide clean water to over 17,000 people.
- Distributed 3,500 blankets to keep orphans, widows and the elderly warm.
- Provided medical supplies for those afflicted with AIDS.
- Trained more than 100 workers in basic patient care and HIV prevention.
- Encouraged the local church in Malawi by training more than 400 pastors and leaders.
God is working in Malawi through City of Grace and our ministry partners. But there is much more to do. We invite you to pray with power for the people of Malawi, to continue to donate to make a difference, and to consider joining us on a Global Adventure to Malawi.
If you would like to get involved in Malawi, consider the following two projects.
